Title: Slovenska grb in zastava — heraldika in veksilologija
(in English: Slovenian coat of arms and flag — heraldry and vexillology) Medium: book Main author(s):Zmago Jelinčič Language:Slovene Edition (publisher: place): Učila: Ljubljana (Slovenia) Edition date:2008 (1st ed.) Pages: 400 (<) Format: A4 (tall) (279×210 mm)
Thus book contains the history
of the development of the Slovenian flags and coats of arms, with
lots of images, but also it seems that it includes rather large
part on the Jelinčič’s ideas how the new symbols
(not only flags and coats or arms, but military insignia and orders)
should look like.
Looking briefly at the several pages from the book, I get a
feeling that it should be rather interesting and should include a
lots of valuable material, however, it seems to me that at least
some of the text should be taken with a grain of salt, showing a
bit of his odd political views.
(For example, on the page on Slovenian
flags used by partisans in WWII, he seems to imply that the
“Russian” tricolour was preffered by them because
of the connection with communist Russia
— although the the time the Russian tricolour
was not used by Russians/Soviets for several decades and the link
is quite questionable.)
The book seems to be also a planned move in view of the
incomming Slovenian elections and was promoted by the chaiman of
the Slovenian parliament.

This book can be considered the “bible” of Croatian
heraldry, listing the principles and charges of heraldry in
Croatian and of Croatian family coats of arms. Contains some 20
black and white tables illustrating the concepts and charges used
on coats of arms. Also, basics of sfragistics and genealogy are
presented. No direct vexillologic contents in this issue, but see
[zma96]. Željko Heimer, 09 Jul 2000

colours issue of [zma71]. Can be found in
Second hand book shops, but is not cheap.
In addition to the text and black and white illustrations of
the 1st issue, here are added a number of new illustrations in
colours, additions regarding the new state arms (since last issue
Croatia gained independence), the terminologic dictionary of
heraldic expressions (Croatian-German-Italian), summaries in
German, English and Italian, and bibliography lists are enlarged.
The part regarding the basics of vexillology is added (12
pages). Željko Heimer, 09 Jul 2000

Nearly a replica of [zna99] — three stars
added for Gagauzia, the whole flag, not
just the canton of Taiwan, the flag of
East Flanders has been replaced by the one
of Ouarzazate (twice!), the flag of
Amsterdam slightly changed, flag of
Warsaw/Prague
added (one image) - the name "SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN" added;
Zuidholland’s flag replaces the
Scottish; no new flags for
Rwanda, Comores,
Nunavut — so it seems to be more a
correction than an “update”. Jarig Bakker, 18 Oct 2002
It seems that most if not all of the noted
corrections have been made. Nathan Lamm, 20 Oct 2002
I believe that is actually part (one of two halves) of

While it is of smaller dimensions than The World Encyclopedia
of Flags [zna99], and has a different
cover design, I am sorry to have to report that the reverse of the
title page bears the statement «This edition was previously
published as The World Encyclopedia of Flags». (In
very small print I might add.) I could not find any
statement indicating that anything had been revised, added,
corrected or updated. I didn’t think to check if it had the
new Rwanda flag. I jotted down the Contents
page headings and page references and when home compared them to
those in my copy of the [zna99] — they
appear identical. The only difference at all which I could spot is
that the new work has 8 additional pages at the rear of the book,
headed "Notes", and otherwise blank. Ned Smith, 19 Oct 2003

It seems that all those atrocious mistakes made in the first
edition [zna99] were corrected, although it
does not quite catch up with the recent development in
Serbia and Montenegro,
nor those of the Indian Navy. Miles Li, 08 May 2007

Considering that no relevant flag book (except for the Album
corrections [pay00]) was published
after Crampton’s 1990 books
[cra84], I agree Znamierowski is
«the best flag book in the last ten years».
But I find the amount of mistakes far
too much for what that book ought to be — a good, reliable
reference work.
Such as Smith 1975 [smi75b] is.
When I find now something new in Znamierowski 1999, I ask myself,
«is this a something new, or just one more mistake?».
Pity.
Santiago Dotor, 03 Feb 2003
I should point out that while it’s a very nice book,
it’s not quite an “encyclopedia”. Flags are
placed in certain sections without a clear order, which gives a
nice overview but not an encyclopedic comprehensiveness and
accessibility. Nathan Lamm, 21 Out 2002
