authorship is attributed to Umair Mirza, a name which doens’t
show anywhere in the PDF downloadable from that same page. Is this
just a simple mistake, or is there more to it? (And maybe we should
re-evaluate how we attribute authorship to this whole D.K. series:
Siobhán Ryan’s role seems to
have been limited to the first few editions and maybe was never
preponderant, and very likely the most significant authorship to be
given is that of «Vexillology artwork and consultants
Graham Bartram,
Michael Faul», maybe even since the
very first edition in 1997.)
The cover (or just the dustjacket?) is topped by «Smithsonian
Handbooks» flanked by the logos of Dorling
Kindersley and of the Smithsonian Institution,
as a series title, but, again, "Smithsonian" doesn’t occur in the
PDF’s text content. The colophon page however does hint at fact
that this is an edition meant for the U.S. market, even though created

It has a fabric cover and gives the impression of what a flag
looks and feels like. In my opinion it is an excellent publication
and features the new South Sudan flag, however
there are some notable flags not featured in this publication, these
being the new flag of Ascension Island, the
new Tokelau Islands flag even though
Nuie and Cook Islands are
featured, the flags of the Dutch Caribbean Islands
Saba and St Eustatius
even though their sister Islands flags of Aruba,
Bonaire and Curacao are
featured, the flags of all of Australia’s
overseas Territories are also not included and the flags of the
French Territories of New Caledonia and
French Guiana are not featured but the flags of
French Polynesia and St Pierre
and Miqueleon are. Aside from these omissions this is in my opinion
a well presented and put together flag publication. It retails for

As far as I can tell, the drawings originate from the
same vector original as the World Flag Data Base. The black
lines are there precisely to “ruin” the images,
I guess, as a way to disencourage cheap piracy… An
