Second part of a 15-volume series entitled Histoire du
commerce et de l’industrie de Marseille - XIXe-XXe
siècles (History of commerce and industry in
Marseilles - 19th-20th centuries).
The book, written mostly using the archives of the Chamber
of Commerce and Industry of Marseilles, which played a great
role in the maritime development of the city and was presided
by important shipowners, described all the shipping companies
which operated in Marseilles between 1830 and the end of the
XIXth century. For each company, a detailed history, a ship
list when available and scale drawings of the ship are given,
as well as the house flag(s) of the company. The drawings are
in black-and-white but there are three colour plates of flags
and funnels in the beginning of the book. About 200 companies
and 1,100 ships are presented. Indexes of companies and ships,
as well as a rich bibilogrpahy are provided.
The companion book (not seen) is the first part of the
series: Armateurs marseillais du XIXe siècle, by
Roland Caty and Eliane Richard (1986)
[rct86], mostly dedicated
to the shipowners.
The foreword of the book mentions that a similar work has
started for the French ports of Le Havre and Duinkirk.
The book can be ordered online at the
CCI;
price is 30 Euros.

The first edition of the famous Boutell’s Heraldry,
with many reprints including the most recent one by Warne
[rha73].
A publishing saga almost as complicated than Flags of the
World.
The Reverend Charles Boutell wrote The Manual of Heraldry
in 1863; however, the second edition,
published in the same year, was entitled Heraldry, Historical
and Popular. A third edition was
published in 1864.
In 1931, V. Wheeler-Holohan wrote an edition which
combined elements from both books, and called it
[hol31] Boutell’s Manual
of Heraldry. This was revised by C. W. Scott-Giles in 1950, as
[scg50] Boutell’s
Heraldry. J. P. Brook-Little assisted Scott-Giles with the
1963 and
1966 editions, before becoming
editor for the 1970,
1978 and
1982 (the final) editions.

The custom of dressing the black poplar growing in Aston-on-Clun
in south Shropshire — known as the Arbor Tree — with flags
on flagpoles every 29 May is unique in Britain. new flags are
attached to wooden flagpoles on the tree that remain throughout the
year. Written
records of the Arbor Tree only extend back to 1898, but the tradition
of dressing the tree is reputed to date back to a local wedding in
1786. The article attempts to establish the history and context of
the tradition and shows how the custom has developed and acquired
new meanings, particularly since 1955 when a pageant was devised.
The pageant and the celebrations associated with the tree dressing
are evolving in response to those living in the local community as
well as to the external recognition now accorded to this unique
tradition.
