(in English: Collection of National flags and pennants) Medium: plate set Main author(s):J. Hjorth Languages:Danish and German (High) and English Edition (publisher: place): J. Hjorth: København (Denmark) Edition date:1833 Previous edition: [hjo20]
Signa Mundi has most of
Samling af Nation-Flage og Wimpler online in two files:
p.1-2 and
p.3-4.
I’m writing "most", as the publication is supposed to have 9
pages, while Signa Mundi shows 8: Tables 2-8 show flags 1-105,
with 4 additional flags 106-109 on 1, the title page. There could,
however, have been a closing page that had a full-page illustration,
or similar ninth table. All flags are shown sinister-hoisted; the
orientation of the side shown appears to differ. This, however, is
a different version (not [hjo20]). I would say
that the other two languages were added later; they may not be part
of the 1820 edition [hjo20]. This 1833 edition
at least states explicitly that J. Hjorth is the publisher. Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 31 mar 2019
This article sets the scene for this special edition, which was
originally inspired by the 2001 Brunel University Conference on
“The Nation and Sport”. The distinctive complexities to the
interface of sport, nation and identities are illustrated. The
notion that sport presents a problematic intervention into the
concept of a nation and the reshaping of identities is investigated
along with the imbalance in the depth of consideration from different
academic disciplines. The import of anthems and emblems, through
sporting usage, is discussed, and the related language of the subject
matter, i.e. nation-state, patriotism, is explored. The potential for
increased attention to the subject matter from anthropologists is
illustrated and the need for multi-disciplinary approaches to sport,
the nation and identity is mooted.
