Hillsboro Unveils New Flag Symbolizing Community Unity and Cultural Heritage After Engaged Citizen Vote

The city of Hillsboro has chosen a new flag, a symbol of community unity and pride in its cultural roots and forward-thinking ethos. Garnering 2,944 votes out of 4,200 cast on Engage Hillsboro this fall, the flag features four green panels, evoking Hillsboro's agricultural heritage; a marigold circle, symbolizing historical connection; a blue circle for unity; and a Trillium flower, honoring the region's Indigenous legacy and the city's commitment to harmony.

Inspired by a drive to capture the spirit of Hillsboro, the city invited community members to share their stories and values for the flag design through an August survey. The 2025 Civic Leadership Academy, armed with these insights and backed by City graphic designer Jenny Granillo Martinez Beltran, created three flag design finalists that stood testament to four key themes–community, nature, history, and technology. Having received support from Beltran, the Academy conducted hundreds of interviews with community stakeholders.

Academy member Lynn Coffin, discussing the profound engagement of residents throughout the flag design process, said, "Working on the Hillsboro Community Flag project reminded me how deeply people care about this city," as told to Hillsboro-Oregon.gov. "Every conversation, from long-time residents to new neighbors, reflected pride in our shared home and excitement about creating a symbol that truly belongs to everyone."

With the city council's expected adoption of the flag come January 2026, the new signifier of Hillsboro's identity will make its first appearance at the State of the City event on February 19, within the receptive walls of the Hillsboro Civic Center. As it showcases the community's salient traits, the flag will serve as a visual statement of Hillsboro's values, representing a collective vision of belonging, natural heritage, rich history, and thriving technology.
