The two stripes of blue that run across the flag represent the two largest waterways in Greene County: Nolichucky River in the south and Lick Creek in the north.

The four stars represent Greene County’s four incorporated municipalities: Greeneville, Tusculum, Mosheim, and Baileyton. The gold color was chosen to represent brightness, brilliance and value.

Although the original proposal is (at the time of writing) shown above as the county flag, Greene County did not adopt an official flag by resolution until April 15, 2024. As for the proposal, the ribbon was added around fall of 2022. The idea of a county flag came about after a request from the Tennessee State Fair and the State of Tennessee. The flag was designed by Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison with help from other county officials.

According to the resolution which adopts the flag, green represents the county's landscape, vibrancy, and perpetual life. Apparently the seal being centered shows “unity, cohesion, pride and commonality” for all of Greene County. The “In God We Trust” ribbon was added to “acknowledge Greene County’s faith-based history and heritage”, including its role in the establishment of Tusculum University.
